Leatt at Eurobike

Leatt at Eurobike

Leatt started out making neck braces, a product that they have become famous for, last year saw the prototype of their first helmet, which was back on the stand in full production mode this year. The brand have nee busy though, their ethos is and always will be about rider protection, so in addition to the neck braces, pads and the new helmet there is a huge push on some very technical hydration packs as well as some gloves that add a little something extra too!

The new style packs are on the right, the DBX Enduro WP far right and the DBX Mountain Lite pack in both the blue and red and green option.

The DBX Enduro WP pack is a true piece of engineering, fully waterproof and in a tough fabric it is built to withstand the rigours of serious enduro racing and hard days up the mountain. It features 5 litres of cargo space and 2 litres of hydration. All the seams are welded, so there is no stitching to leak or come loose and the finish is very stylish. However, this bag does so much more than that… First up the Full Face helmet carry is fast and easy with elastic clips, but it doesn’t just hold the chin strap allowing the lid to move while you grind your way up the hill. A secondary elastic fastener grips the rest of the helmet and keeps it exceedingly secure.

These days if you ride hard off road, then you really should be wearing a neck brace, it’s a no brainer if you are at a level where a crash could result in serious injury because of the speeds you are travelling. DH riders don’t leave home without them, and these days most enduro riders are going just as quick. The DBX Enduro WP has another trick up its sleeve, it can securely carry a neck brace as well as the full face lid! No excuses now, take all your protective gear up the mountain with you, and shred in confidence on the way down!

This bag of tricks isn’t done yet though, excuse the pun, how about a pocket for your mobile, that has a touch screen panel so you can still control your phone and start your Strava bashing or answer a call… Naturally it works with their gloves too, but we’ll get to those in a second!

There are two routing paths for the hydration hose, so you can feed it up into a full face lid or over your shoulder for open face use. You’l notice there is no waist strap either, Leatt have worked on creating a harness that has enough grip to do away with it, less is very much more here. Inside the bag there are pockets to carry all your necessary items, as well as a thermo covering for the hydration to keep it cool. The hydration pack itself can be flipped inside out for easy cleaning, there is even a little tab welded to the inside so you can hang it up to dry… These guys really have thought of everything! Oh and just to keep in line with their safety focused mindset a category 1 back protector is included too.

The DBX Mountain Lite pack is a lighter and smaller version for shorter rides, it features the same hydration system, as well as the Level 1 back protector. You get 2 litres of water but only a litre of storage space, it does feature the same harness system that negates the need for a separate waist belt and it can also carry the full face lid and the neck brace in the same manner as it’s bigger brother! The harness on both packs is adjustable to get the best fit, so you’ll be able to lock the pack down for aggressive riding.

Next on the list of clever innovations from the brand is the DBX 4.0 Glove, these things have to be seen to be believed, very minimalist and light they feature a new £D moulded Amourgel protective guard which is certified to be used on road going motorcycle gloves. Lets just say in layman’s terms these little additions should be able to cope with the rigours of riding a mountain bike. They have been welded onto the gloves, so there is no stitching and therefore no areas that will cause abrasion while you are riding. The material reacts on impact, hardening to protect you and the shape has been designed so it is comfortable in the event of a big impact.

The Nano Grip palm...

The Nano Grip palm…

The Nano Grip palm features fibres that are microscopic, this means they offer amazing grip, and cleverly when they get wet, they grip even harder, the new material offers a superior feel to traditional gloves and you can use your smartphone with this stuff too. Leatt have extended the material over the tips of your fingers to facilitate this even more, and yes you can use your phone, in the Enduro WP pouch with these on… There are 3 levels of glove material, X-Flow for maximum ventilation, Lite which is similar to a standard glove and Windblock which offers some warmth in colder and wetter weather. You can also have two levels of protection on the gloves, choosing to cover the outer fingers and knuckles, or just the knuckles if you desire.

These are going to be a hit...

Lastly we have the DBX Helmet, available in a variety of options and colour ways there is a lot of tech in this lid, Leatt spent a lot of time getting it just right and they have ploughed a huge amount of research into it. First up is the Turbine Technology, these are small blue discs in the interior that can move a little to reduce the forces involved in a crash. The can compress as well as twist on a circular axis so every kind of crash is covered. They improve multiple impact protection and offer a 30% reduction of head impact at concussion level and a 40% reduction of rotational acceleration to the head and brain…

Leatt have also utilised 3d In-Moulded V-Foam as well which deforms and compresses on impact to reduce the g-forces in the event of a crash. In addition to that the outer shell of the lid has been reduced too, effectively reducing the rotational mass of the helmet. Lastly of course the helmet works brilliantly with their neck braces whilst offering the maximum amount of movement. On a comfort front there are plenty of vents and the carbon version is light enough for you to not really notice it.
