Bending bike frames around trees isn’t normally the way to do things, that is unless you’re a custom framebuilder with an invite to the Hack Bike Derby and only have a weekend and a few hundred quid budget to build a bike. Time to get the sketchbook out, head to the workshop and get welding some bits of metal together.

“Nick Larsen from Charge Bikes was one of the 17 frame builders invited to build a bike for the Hack Bike Derby event held in Somerset, in the UK earlier this year. This video documents the design and build of his bike and the race weekend itself from his eyes.

“Being a locally based business, Charge Bikes’ Larsen heard about the event, and was keen to be involved, he said: “I have been handbuilding frames for 25 years, I’ve just made fairly slow progress and this was actually my third attempt – since I was 16 years old! Charge Bikes are handbuilt, just not by me, so I felt very lucky to get an invite! This was one of the best times I have ever had on two wheels and it was great to meet all these other talented builders”.
