Whilst ZOIC (pronounced zoh-wick) might appear in Europe to be a relatively new name on the cycle clothing scene they have, in fact, been making mountain bike clothing since 1994 having emerged from the trails of the Marin Headlands in California, which is where their offices are still based.

The Downtown Jacket is a new model in their line-up for this autumn and is billed as ‘an all conditions jacket for downtown, around town, or on the trail’.

The first thing that strikes you about the jacket is the material, it’s a really soft and flexible fabric, and not what you expect from something that claims it can protect you in a downpour. However, this double-weave stretch fabric has been coated with a Durable Water Repellent Treatment (DWR) and the rain rolls off as though it’s a duck’s back.

The Downtown jacket is simple in its styling with 2 front zip hand pockets, gently elasticated cuffs, large rear pocket and subtle reflective logo and marking on the back. Despite this simplicity, the jacket has some innovative features, such as the silicone zipper pulls that are easy to grab and use even when your hands are wet or wearing gloves.

A neat collar and a loose fit, but with a slightly dropped rear to protect your derriere, complete the look of this jacket as a very versatile ‘anywhere, anytime’, number. Did I mention that it can also be scrunched up small enough to fit in a day-pack whilst still leaving room for your lunch and spare inner tubes? You won’t want to get it too dirty or crumpled though as you’ll be just as keen to wear it down the pub as on the bike…that said, it’s also machine washable…
