Muc-Off may have expanded their range to include everything from mineral oil to massage rub, but their core product is still the humble bike wash. Unglamourous, the spray is a workhorse of the bike world and spawned many competitors and rivals. Regardless of how bikes develop, they will still need to be cleaned.

The 8-in-1 is a box set from Muc-Off designed to clean the worst of the worst from your steed. A classic bottle of the cleaner is included of course, along with an armoury of brushes of all shapes and sizes. From a vacuum packed sponge to a pokey gear brush, all mechanical aids for cleaning are covered. Once clean, a bottle of Bike Protect aims to keep your bike sparkling and prevent too much muck clinging to your shiny frame.

At £40 it's not cheap, and many of the brushes could be found from next to the kitchen sink, but as a set up for someone new to biking, they provide an essential combination. The tub it all comes in doubles as a bucket so it's all good to go.

In Use

Muc-Off cleaner is an industry standard now, the colour and the branding synonymous with cleaning bicycles. It's big, one-litre bottle and the spray is efficient but on the side of frugal, meaning plenty of sprays to get things soapy. Once on, the basic effect of the cleaner isn't wonderous and leaving it for a few minutes before rinsing doesn't yield fantastic results. Give it a good scrub and things get moving, yet on its own I have used better.

The brushes are where this collection comes together, as they do give a fine selection of tools for getting into every nook and cranny. The big soft brush is quick and safe on the delicate parts of your frame whilst the specially shaped smaller brushes get into the chain and cogs as needed. Sure, non-branded alternatives are available, but these brushes are good.

The Bike Protect is an aerosol spray which coats the frame and anything else other than brakes (hopefully). Its aim is to drive out moisture and prevent dirt build up, and could well look after your bike in the long run. However, I generally feel that providing a bike is well cleaned and lubed, things will probably be ok without more cans of spray.

Overall

The cleaner is still a benchmark for bike wash, however, there is serious competition now on the market, some of which outclass the Muc-Off performance. As a package, the set of brushes give the new mountain biker a solid array of tools for keeping their bike moving and dirt free for years to come.  It’s a good combo to get your workshop started.
